Description : [ Tribal Art ] A Superb Bamana Female Figure Mal'i standing on a circular base the flat feet and short legs supporting an elongated torso with protruding breasts the faceted shoulders leading to arms held to the sides and incised hands resting on the rounded hips the thick neck beneath a helmet-shaped head the whole decorated with rows of dotted incised scarification; exceptionally fine blackened and worn patina. height 15.5in. 39.4cm Provenance Carlebach Gallery New York November 30 1952 This female figure reveals Stanley Marcus's classic taste in African art-a highly refined abstract female figure. This figure was exhibited alongside his collection of Modern paintings Acquired in 1952 this date places Marcus among the f st generation of American collectors of African art like Alfred Barnes and a handful of other collectors Marcus saw the aesthetic dynamic between modern paintings and exceptional examples of African sculpture. See Sweeney 1935 figure 4 for a very closely related female Jo figure exhibited at the landmark exhibition at the Museum for Modern Art New York African Negro Art in 1935
