Description : Staff edan oshugbo add to watchlistYoruba, Nigeria, Obo Ajegunle, Ekiti bronze, patina, one from a pair of edanstaffs, showing a janus head on top and a birds head at the base, exuberantly decorated with plaited band pattern and circle ornaments with a bowl in the centre, min. dam., edan staffs were important ritual objects in ogboni society. They were worn around the neck as a symbol for membership. They protected their owners against diseases and played an important role during funeral celebrations. In pre-colonial times ogboni society had not only religious, but political and jurisdictional functions as well. With the founding of the Reformed Ogboni Fraternity in 1914 the old rites of the ogboni Society lost their meaning. H: 21 cm, (4865/004) Provenance Balint B.
