This is the rating and price for Tiv Ihambe Figure

Description : African, Northeast Nigeria, 20th century, Tiv culture With a population of about 6 million people spread across Eastern Nigeria and Cameroon, the Tiv people represent the most important group of northeast Nigeria. They do not create masks, solely figures called ihambe which have not been made since the beginning of the twentieth century. Ihambe fall into two distinct stylistic categories, the post style and the realistic style. This example shows influences of the latter. It was carved from wood with a dark patina and possesses muscular limbs and broad shoulders, herniated navel, and free worked arms and legs. The figure is male with genitalia covered by a woven, raffia loincloth and belt. He also carries a basket on his back, a pointed instrument/staff (perhaps the lower half of a flywhisk) in his right hand, wears a beaded necklace, and is crowned by a cap covered with cowrie shells and red beads. Ihambe were often positioned outside of a house to protect the dwellers by providing a link to their lineage, connecting them with their ancestors. 27 1/2T x 11D (with basket) x 7W Provenance: Ex-Robert Pearson collection, Denver, CO All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
