Description : THOMAS ONA ODULATE (NIGERIA, C. 1900-1952) YORUBA, AFRICAN CARVED FIGURES, LOT OF THREE, wood with applied pigments, depicting a native soldier with a gun, and two Colonial officers, each with gun and hat, one with plume, one with a staff. Second quarter 20th century. 9 to 13 1/4 HOA. Catalogue Note: Thomas Ona was born in Ijebu Ode, Nigeria, and later moved to Lagos, where he gained notoriety carving figures, mainly sold to British Colonists and other travelers. His figures are pioneering in subject manner but traditional in style, following the usual Yoruba proportions depicting an oversized head. Ona used traditional Yoruba carving tools of adze and knife and then added pigments to highlight his sculptures. His work is represented in many Museum collections, including the British Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology, and the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
