Description : West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba culture, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden figure standing atop an integral plinth holding a staff and bags crisscrossed over the shoulders. The head has characteristic crested hair, a protruding snout-like mouth with sharp teeth, three vertical scarification marks on the cheeks, and remains of blue pigment within the recessed crevices. This was probably a type of shrine or altar figure, and the wood is lustrous and smooth from age and touch. Condition report : Base is repaired with break line radiating across the figure's feet with losses and chips to this area as shown. Forearms reattached to elbows. Old inactive insect holes on base and body as shown and stable pressure fissures. Good remains of blue pigment & lustrous patina.
