Description : Superb Kissi Divination Figure, Guinea/Liberia/Sierra Leone pom'kandya Wood with shiny black ritual patination, fiber, metal coin Height 17 1/4in (44cm) Provenance American Private Collection Renaud Vanuxem, Paris Private Collection Cf. National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., Inventory no. 3016-4-9, for a similar sculpture 'collected by Siegmann in 1968 or 1969 during research in a Loma village that is located near the neighboring Kissi, such figural oracles, called pom'kandya ('dressed pombo') or pom'wama ('divining pombo'), combine carved stone figures ( pombo) and metal objects for divinatory purposes, a practice that was observed in the early twentieth century but may date back centuries.'
