Description : -Suku (Basuku)- -Democratic Republic of the Congo- The Suku have an initiation, called the n-khanda, in which a special hut is built in the forest to give shelter to postulants during their retreat,, and ends in circumcision. This is an occasion for great masked festivities including dances and song. There are different types of masks which fulfill several functions, with some serving as protection against evil forces, and others, ensuring the fertility of the young initiate. Other masks frighten the public, heal the sick, or cast spells. The appearance of the masks must engender terror, especially the Kakuungu with its swollen cheeks, massive features, and protruding, chin. Some masks are supposedly an image of the community of deceased elders, notably the chiefs of the maternal lineage. These masks are used to promote success in the hunt, to heal, and to, punish criminals, and were also worn by dancers during certain initiation ceremonies. Provenance: These pieces were collected over a period of several decades out of collections from America
