Description : Sickness mask of Dan, Ivory Coast, carved wood. Elongated, asymmetrical face with bulging forehead, drooping eyelids, distorted nose and mouth, representing a facial paralysis. 28.5 x 21 cm Several African ethnic groups used sickness masks, such as the Dan and the Baoulé of Ivory Coast, and the Pende of Congo, among others, who called this type of sick African mask mbangu. This type of African masks had the function of treating and protecting both mental and physical illnesses. The contrast of the two face colors among the hanged people of the Congo represented the struggle of good against evil, health against disease. It was used by witch doctors and allowed the sick person to remove the evil spell that had made the patient sick. They were also used as a preventive measure on patients who thought they had received a bad spell or patients who wanted to protect themselves from a possible evil spell that a malevolent person could cast on them. These masks inspired some of the great painters of the 20th century, especially Picasso
