This is the rating and price for Rare African Guere Mask
Description : These Masks are considered rare and highly sought after. Second half 20th. C. or earlier. We carvers focused on sculpting powerful face masks to which paraphernalia such as shells, bells, nails and feathers were added which were thought to reinforce the power of the masks. The ferocious aspect of Guere/Bete masks - bulging eyes, open mouths and sometimes protruding horns - accounts for their identification as war masks but, according to Bacquart, they are worn primarily during funerals and - in a detective capacity - to single out guilty persons. The Guere, neighbors of the Dan, make masks for similar purposes but usually of a form that is more ugly or scary than Dan masks. They are used for rituals and to appear frightening to enemies. CONDITION good, 3'' long age crack at top of back of head, minor scuff marks. H. 14'' W. 8'' D. 7''. ''Provenance Anne Narosny African Art Collection Estate'' Sale # 1 of 3''
