Description : This is a set of 3 wooden, possibly vintage, fetishes. The pieces originate from central Africa, and were originally crafted by the BAKONGO people. The pieces are crafted, from wood, nails, and fabric. The largest of the pieces measures approx 12 inches H, 6.5 inches W, and 5 inches deep. The pieces show signs of wear due to their age. African art, spiritual, spirits, sculptures, folk art, tribal art, arts and crafts, idols, totems, mantle accessories, shelf accessories. 9 Fetishes were protective figures used by individuals, families, or whole communities to destroy or weaken evil spirits, prevent or cure illnesses, repel bad deeds, solemnize contracts or oath-taking, and decide arguments. The nails or blades, when driven in, activated the fetish’s spiritual power. Small figures were family owned and were used to protect the home, larger ones would protect an entire village.
