Description : West Africa, Burkina Faso, Mossi peoples, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden whistle of a tall and slender form. The forked portion on the bottom functions as the instrument's mouthpiece, and several perforations along the length enable air to be blown out at relatively high pitches that could be heard over vast distances. The neck and tapered body are incised with intricate linear motifs, and an openwork fork at the tip was at one time used as a suspension loop when intact. Size: 1.25 W x 9.625 H (3.2 cm x 24.4 cm), 10.625 H (27 cm) on included custom stand.
