Description : A distinctive karanga (Mask) of wan-nyaka (Gazelle) of the Mossi peoples of Burkina Faso and Mali. This 'big' mask, with a vertical superstructure extending 59, shaped as a flat, narrow rectangle with geometric and incised designs, antelope horns and big eyes. The sheer size and magnitude makes this 'the big mask' known as the wan-tasenga and is the principal mask used at funerals and year-end sacrifices. It is brought out less often, and does not leave the primarily village where the clan resides. When not in use it is stored in the kimse roogo (ancestral shrine) or the clan leaders home. measures app 59 x 7 x 8 shows old restoration, shows age and smoothed wood from actual use.
