Description : Ancient Egypt, Middle Kingdom, 11th to 14th Dynasty, ca. 2130 to 1650 BCE. A hand-carved wooden right arm from a larger human figure. The surfaces are decorated with gentle yellow pigment that mimics sun-washed skin while remains of red along the shoulder as well as black-painted bracelets indicate how elaborately the full figure must have appeared when first carved. Held firmly inside of clenched fingers is a slender, brown-painted handle, perhaps the handle of a tool or other daily implement, while a pair of mortises on the inside of the shoulder illustrate how the arm attached to the larger articulated figure. Size: 12.5 L x 1.5 W x 2.625 H (31.8 cm x 3.8 cm x 6.7 cm), 4.3 H (10.9 cm) on included custom stand. Condition report : This is an arm from a larger figure as shown. Loss to upper section of held implement. Small chips and light abrasions, with one lengthy fissure along interior surface, light fading to pigment, and light earthen deposits, otherwise in excellent condition. Great preservation to pigment and overall form.
