In ancient times the elderly women of the Mendes used masks like this, during the rites of passage to adulthood called Bundu, to explain to the girls the behavior to be held about the various household chores that soon would affect their lives and families. They explained to them how to administer the money, keep a house, respect the husband etc.. They taught young women the social rules not only verbally, but also visually through four aesthetic traits common to all the masks used in Bundu rites: first, the hair always well-done, only the crazy go around disheveled. Second, the broad forehead denotes intelligence and open-mindedness. Third, the fat rolls on the neck represent the canon of beauty, prosperity, well-being and wealth to aspire to.
