About the lot N° 50
Title : Marionette Bamana Bamana Puppet
Size : 71 cm
Provenance : Celeste et Armand Bartos, New York, acquise auprès de ce dernier avant 1975
Notes : This relatively small puppet would have been part of a larger superstructure of masks worn in the Ségou region in the didactic Sogow masquerade. The puppets are called Maani (maa - human beings and ni - the diminutive of: little people) (Arnoldi in Colleyn (ed.), pp 77-93) See Christie's, Paris, 10 June 2008 lot 12 for a related puppet formerly in the Meulendijk Collection and published in Wassing, African Art, Amsterdam, 1968, p.221, n.24. This work can be seen in a 1975 photo of the Bartos's New York apartment, prominently placed in their living room.
