Description : West Africa, Northern Nigeria, Mama peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. An interesting example of a mangam mask, hand-carved from a single piece of wood and painted with red and brown earthen pigment. The animal features a rounded head with a plateaued brow, a protruding snout with an deep incision denoting the mouth, a stocky neck that widens to form the concave verso, and a pair of projecting horns. Mangam masks typically represent the bushcow (Suncerus caffer nanus) but can also depict a waterbuck (Kobus ellipsiprymnus) or a reedbuck (redunca redunca).
