Description : West Africa, Burkina Faso, Lobi culture, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. This is a charming hand-carved wooden deer or antelope effigy of a stylized and simplistic form. Using the natural crooks and branches from the branch, the artist whittled four legs, a sinuous body, and a slender head upon a thick neck. Lobi practice ancestor worship and home altars with sculptures of ancestor batebas which translate to wood carved figures, and animals that protect and act as intermediaries between people and spirits. Size: 6.5 L x 2.75 W x 6 H (16.5 cm x 7 cm x 15.2 cm), 6.75 H (17.1 cm) on included custom stand.
