Description : Lega Figure
Democratic Republic of the Congo
A rare and important male “katanda” statue with raised arms used by the Bwami in their initiation rites. The extremely flat body and the short arms raised upwards are dotted with holes, while the face in the traditional heart shape is whitewashed with kaolin. Lega figures almost always act as teaching tools and for deepening traditions for both young people and members of the society.
