Description : Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kuba, ca. late 19th to mid-20th century CE. An extremely long Kuba cloth comprised of many tightly woven raffia panels embroidered with dark brown curvilinear motifs and geometric shapes. Juxtaposed within the linear forms are abstract stylized motifs of arrows, diamonds, and handprint. This large cloth was a group effort that could take many months- the men wove the panels on a single heddle loom which were then embellished by the women and children using embroidery, appliques, or cut-pile techniques. Such abstract geometric patterns are usually symbolic of an individual's social and marital status, age, and/or personal attributes or character.
