Description : A Kota reliquary Gabon, on a faceted diamond base, the sheet-metal clad wood sculpture depicting a stylized oval human face, a flat disc collar surrounding the face and ending with a short flip on both sides, the face marked by diamond eyes fastened on a slanted plane over the incised cheeks and mouth, a chevron-incised ridge rising across the forehead, similar incisions around the perimeter of the collar frame, a raised diamond lozenge at the back, an old tag on the back reads 12/3 made in Africa, French Congo. Height 21in Provenance: A Northwest estate, an apparent auction review from a British magazine was taped to the back of the present figure. Indicative of the fact that it was written long ago is the following statement: There were a great many first-class African masks and other carvings in a recent Sotheby sale, when the kind of carving which would have sold for ten pounds or twenty pounds a few years ago surprised the majority of those present by soaring well into three figures.
