Description : Igbo Seated Female Figure
Nigeria
The Igbo are the second largest group of people living in southern Nigeria.
Igbo art is known for various types of masquerade, masks, and outfits symbolizing people, animals, or abstract conceptions. The lack of overall centralization among the Igbo-speaking peoples has been conducive to the development of a great variety of art styles and cultural practices. Igbo sculpture is subject to rather strict rules: the figures are generally frontal, symmetrical, and upright, with legs slightly spread, arms held away from the body, and hands stretched forward, palms open. The proportions are true to those of the human body. These statues are displayed during ceremonies and strengthen the sense of community solidarity.
Here we have an extremely unusual Igbo seated female figure carved from light wood, showing color pigments. The arms are carved separately and are movable. The figure has a headdress and a necklace, and the impression of her is generally more Asian than African!
