Description : of hollowed cylindrical form, and pierced around the lower rim for attachment, the open pierced mouth bearing teeth beneath a flaring nose and deepset eyes with incised scarification markings across the brow, all beneath a thick set of horns rising up to the back, deep black, worn and varied patina overall with traces of kaolin in the mouth, eyes and ears.

Notes : This highly expressionistic mask belongs to a group of Bangwa masks called Challenge masks, worn by members of the head-hunters society during dance ceremonies. The headdress is worn on the top of the head. See Brain and Pollock (1971:33) for a simlar example in situ. Both display a characteristic Bangwa style of dramatic form, apparently refering to the physical prowess of the dancer or victim.
