Diese Maske bleibt auch nach gründlichem Studium der bekannten Quellen rätselhaft. Die vorhandenen Merkmale wie Form, Stil, Gebrauchsspuren, Patina oder auch die nicht vorhandene Randlochung usw. lassen sich in vergleichbaren Objekten zwar einzeln finden, aber die Kombination aller Elemente in einem einzigen Werk scheint, zumindest in der gängigen Literatur, einmalig zu sein.
Die in den Sammlungsunterlagen gefundene Notiz erwähnt eine klare Zuordnung, wobei diese Angaben auch zum heutigen Zeitpunkt noch nicht weiter belegt sind: 'This unusual mask reproduces the feature of the sculpture of the north-eastern Hemba. The object was collected at Kabambare at the beginning of the 1930s by the Roman doctor R. Sulsenti, at the time practicing in Congo. Unfortunately, he was unable to give detailed Information on the object. He was just told that it war a king's effigy.'

Après consultation approfondie des sources connues, ce masque reste une énigme. Ses caractéristiques - forme, style, traces d'usage, patine - de même que l'absence de trous de fixation se retrouvent ici ou là dans des objets comparables, mais la combinaison de tous ces éléments au sein d'une seule et même aeuvre semble en faire un cas unique, du moins dans la littérature existante.
La notice trouvée dans la documentation du collectionneur mentionne une provenance tout à fait précise, qui n'a pas pu être corroborée dans l'état actuel de nos connaissances: «This unusual mask reproduces the feature of the sculpture of the north-eastern Hemba.
