Description : **First Time At Auction**
West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden female figure standing atop an integral circular base with delineated legs. A slender torso bears a strand of black trade beads as well as several rows of incised triangular shapes beneath pendulous breasts. Rounded shoulders support lengthy arms, one of which holds a small bracelet of cowry shells, and an enormous head rests atop a thick neck. Almond eyes, ritual scarification marks, a broad nose, full lips, and cupped ears comprise the visage, with a conical coiffure decorated with dozens of incised bands and a top knot above. Lustrous brown patina covers the majority of this fabulous example. Size: 2.75 W x 11.25 H (7 cm x 28.6 cm).
