This is the rating and price for Guere Bete Mask, second half 20th Cen

Description : Additional Information: This fearsome mask comes from the We/Guere of the Ivory Coast. Like neighboring peoples such as the Bete and the Dan, whose influence can be seen on this mask, the We-Guere carve and used masks of extraordinary form and inventiveness to represent the untamed forces of nature that thy identify as “Gle or Gre”. The dramatic side of this mask is emphasizing by the seven appendages (teeth of animal, horns) converging to a circle carved on the top of the nose and  ,hiding the facial details. The appendages offer a spectacular expression and the powerful form that makes  ,this mask special.. Remains of the white paint, smoke and the dust on the surface of the mask indicate the long use and age of the mask. The face is surrounded by holes used to attach the vegetable fringes, which add to the dramatic look of the mask. In the past masks such as this were considered very aggressive and performed during periods of social strife and war, whereas today they are danced primarily during funerals or are present during judicial proceedings or at times will dance to simply entertain clansmen and villagers. See Jacques Kerchache et al ART OF AFRICA.  , ,I have examined this piece and agree with the description. Niangi Batulukisi, Ph.D
