This is the rating and price for Grebo Carved Wood War Mask

Description : This powerful mask was created by the Grebo people who inhabit the coastal region and neighboring forests of eastern Liberia, Africa. Unlike most other ethnic groups in Liberia, the Grebo do not follow the Poro societal structure. Instead they are ruled by a chief known as 'bodio' who doubles as a grand priest, and lives in near total isolation from the rest of the society. The Grebo believe their masks incarnate the spirits of the invisible world who live in the forest, and designed them with characteristic polychrome painting. Their war masks symbolized the implacable nature of battle, and were designed to terrify viewers. They were often carved with several sets of tubular projecting eyes, which suggests they may have been depicting seers. War masks were typically used to inspire Grebo warriors to fight and to greet warriors returning from successful raids, as well as playing a role in warrior funerals.European artists were entranced by the reversals of positive and negative forms on these striking yet elegantly beautiful masks. This piece features a long, thin nose which mirrors the slight curve of the mask, a protruding mouth with barred teeth, and holes at the top which hold several feathers.Provenance:These pieces were collected over a period of several decades out of collections from America and throughout Europe, including France, Germany, Belgium, and Amsterdam beginning in the early 1960s. The items in this collection have been identified by George Mack, former director of the Arizona African Art Museum.A fantastic piece that's perfect for your collection!Piece has some wear from use, with some recent-looking damage. Moderate sized chip to wood on mask's left edge above the eye. Some cracks that appear to have been tightly repaired.Measures approximately 46 x 14 x 9 with a total weight of 10 lbs.
