Description : A large Central African Bantu Punu tribal mask, hand carved and hand painted in naturalistic colors, with central white background. The Punu mask is an idealized female ancestor's face. The white color is a symbol for peace, spirits of the dead, and the afterlife, and is the predominating color in funeral celebrations and memorials. The masks were worn during funerals and in magical rites whose function was to unmask sorcerers. Modeled in a hyper realistic form with protruding pursed lips, globular protruding eyes, and an incised, curved, high domed forehead, with a rigid high coiffure reflecting Punu tribal women's hairstyles. Good to fair condition with rich patina and aging throughout. Measures 17 in. x 9 1/2 in. x 3 in. Estate fresh to the market. MMB In house continental USA shipping $35 plus insurance.
