This is the rating and price for Fon Vodun Fetish Bochio With Magical Elements, 20th century

Description : Additional Information: A Fon Vodun (or Voodoo) , fetish figure covered in a heavy, encrusted patina with rope wrapped around, binding the figure.  ,The figure is bound with some type of magical object. This sculpture is known as Vodun fetish from the Fon of Benin Republic. similar figures are also found among the Ewe people of Togo. In both cultures, such figures could have been used either to solve marital problems or to promote fertility. The use of fetishes among the Vodun practitioners of Benin is widespread, and in fact they are a vital part of the daily life of the village. A fetish, or more correctly bochio, is in its simplest terms a prayer: a remote object, empowered by a priest, and used as an intermediary for change. Once a fetish has entered the market, there is no way to know exactly what it was used for. , The most frequent use of a bochio is to drive away the meddling forces of witchcraft, which to the Fon is the source of most problems. The use of the male and female statuettes could indicate that a couple was having marital problems, or perhaps one partner was engaged in an illicit affair. For the Fon every stick, every blade of grass, every sound, every animal part has meaning. In some cases they use parts of dead animals in a unique reverse psychology, to bring back to health something that has symbolically died, like a relationship, or the fidelity of a spouse. The Fon people are perhaps the best known of all the Vodun practitioners remaining in Africa, probably because there has been so little success by outsiders to convert them. The practice is extremely widespread however, and even if not formally endorsed by villages or chiefs, it is still a strong force for many individuals all over West Africa, regardless of tribal affiliation. The practice of voodoo in the Caribbean and the United States is, of course, an African import, brought across the Atlantic by would-be slaves. Today the two religions have little in common, however. Though westernized to a certain extent, especially in tourist areas like New Orleans and Savanna, there are still devotees in the southern US and Haiti who practice a relatively pure form of the religion, albeit in private.
