Description : Artist: RAYMOND GID (1905-2000) Size: 15 1/2 x 23 1/2 in./39.5 x 59.6 cm Gid, who studied architecture before turning to poster design and typography, was also something of an amateur anthropologist. In 1930, he joined a four-month expedition, sponsored by the Museum of Ethnography in Paris, to study the indigenous Indians of Northern Canada. Traveling by canoe, he smoked with remote tribesmen by their campfires under the northern lights and made recordings of their songs, as well as etchings of their artifacts. The materials brought back were mounted in an exhibition for which Gid designed the poster. He was thus the obvious posterist for the following year’s exhibit of artifacts from French colonies in Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific. Perfectly expressing Modernism’s encounter with primitivism, Gid juxtaposes African art with Futura lettering and Constructivist-style diagonal composition.
