Description : Africa, Nigeria, Anang Ibibio, ca. mid 20th century CE. A striking face mask with a fascinating superstructure comprised of a squatting man holding an extremely long and colorful snake arching over his head held in his upraised arms. The energetic gent wears a blue outfit with lettering on the pant legs IKEREVE on one leg and TERKIMLI on the other. The face mask below presents eye holes for the wearer, boldly modeled facial features, pierced ears for further decoration, details delineated in black and white on a red ground, and perforations at periphery for attachment. Upon the visage is a colorful headdress with another inscription AI on one end and TER on the other. A wonderful example!
