Description : An elephant headdress mask. Nigeria, Igbo. 20th century. 17 1/4h x 8 1/2w x 11 1/2d. Provenance: Inventory and Collection from the Estate of Merton D. Simpson. Catalog Notes: Though occasionally used a lineage mask during memorial ceremonies for the dead, the elephant mask is rarely used as like the leopard, the elephant is considered a royal animal and can only be worn and represented by particular familial lines.
