Description : Egypt, Middle Kingdom, 11th to 14th Dynasty, ca. 2055 to 1650 BCE, Northern Italy, Etruria, ca. 4th century BCE. A petite scarab, hand-carved from pale-beige steatite, with insectile features on the topside and a trio of inscribed hieroglyphic symbols on the bottom side. The scarab is set within an Etruscan 16K gold bezel with small triangular flaps securing the amulet within. The pendant is then ringed with eighteen small gold bulbs around the perimeter and five additional bulbs in front of each end of the perforated scarab. A truly beautiful example of ancient jewelry which combines characteristic artistic styles from two of history's most storied civilizations. Size (pendant): 0.625 L x 0.5 W (1.6 cm x 1.3 cm), size (scarab): 0.5 L x 0.35 W (1.3 cm x 0.9 cm), total weight: 2.2 grams, gold quality: 16K. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, small nicks and fading to hieroglyphic characters on scarab, and light tarnishing and indentations to bulbs and flaps of gold components, otherwise intact and excellent. Light earthen deposits throughout.
