Description : African Tribal Art: Lulua/Benalulua People, Zaire: Dignitary Mask, 19th/20th Century. Carved wood, detailed with dark stain, the designs heightened with kaolin white pigment, with traces of blue pigment on the headdress. The handle and raised areas show a fine patina from use. The face surface is decorated with raised Tribal scarifications. At top of head a large flat headdress with graphic linear decoration indicates that the mask depicts a tribal dignitary.
