Description :
Title: Die griechisch-agyptische Sammlung von Ernst von Sieglin
Author: Carl Watzinger, Joseph Vogt
Editor: Ernst von Sieglin - Ernst von Sieglin was a Stuttgart businessman and a patron of the arts. Sieglin financed excavations in Alexandria between 1898 and 1902, where the multistoried underground necropolis at Kom-Esch-Schukafa was explored, as well as excavations at the serapeum, in the royal quarter and in the district of Hadra. The findings were published at Sieglin's expense in a multi-volume work entitled Expedition Ernst von Sieglin, Ausgrabungen in Alexandria. A second Sieglin expedition to Egypt took place between 1909 and 1914, under the direction of Georg Steindorff, and discovered the funerary temple of Khepri in Giza.

Condition / Notes: This set consists of the text and plate volume for the second part of the second volume of this multi-volume work entitled Expedition Ernst Sieglin: Ausgrabungen in Alexandria. Both of these volumes are entitled Terrakotten. An additional volume, part 1b of this second part, is a plate volume entitled Malerei und Plastik. It should be noted that the text volume of the set devoted to the terracotta has a smaller format, measuring approximately 9.25 x 12.25.
These volumes are bound in white cloth, with stamped gilt lettering and elaborate ornamentation stamped in gold. The books show external wear, with (light) soiling and rubbing to the covers, as well as darkening to the spines. The flaps of the plate volumes exhibit light foxing, with the bottom flap of both displaying significant tearing at the fold. The books are solidly bound. These volumes are adorned with gilt edges and decoratively patterned endpapers. The interiors are clean and bright. This work is lavishly illustrated, with numerous textual illustrations and tissue-guarded engraved plates.
These volumes have been collated and were found to be complete. The second part of the first volume consists of seven numbered introductory pages, followed by 109 plates. Three of these plates are in color. Part 1B of the second volume contains 50 plates. Plate 50 has a small closed tear at the right edge, measuring approximately 3/4 in length. The second part of the second volume consists of sixteen numbered introductory pages, followed by 206 numbered pages of text. It should be noted that a number of the plates in this work exhibit very light foxing in the margins that does not affect the actual image.
