The mask was most likely collected by Belgian scholar Frans Olbrechts during his expedition to the Ivory Coast in 1938/39. He acquired a large number of objects, including masks, sculptures, utensils and jewelry during his fieldwork among the Dan, Wè and Senufo together with his students Pieter Jan Vandenhoute and Albert Maesen. Olbrechts is considered a pioneer on African art and was one of the first to describe and exhibit the objects he collected in situ as art and not ethnographical items.
Condition:
The mask is in good condition with signs of wear consistent with age and use. Light material abrasions and some notches. The dimensions are 24.5 x 15 cm. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
