Description : Details: This lot consists of the chromolithographs by Luigi Mayer, excised from the book Views in Egypt (first published in 1801) shown in the corresponding images. These chromolithographs portray a number of scenes in ancient Egypt. One print is captioned Ruins of the Gymnasium, Near the Canopic Gate of Alexandria, and shows figures male and female figures, the male figures with spears, in the foreground of the ruins. Another print, titled Entrance to a Sepulchral Chamber Near the Sphinx, shows male figures working and lounging near what appears to be a stone oven. Yet another print shows five men investigating and discussing a sarcophagus, and is entitled An Ancient Sarcophagus of Basaltes, Called the Lovers Fountain. Lastly, the fourth print, called Top of the First Pyramid of Gizah, shows men appearing to be constructing the pyramid, though some lounge to the side and look off into the distance. This collection of prints is from the holdings of Archaeologia Books and Prints. Established in 1983, Archaeologia was known for providing scholarly books of quality on the archaeology of Ancient Egypt, the Near East, Greece & Rome, and the Pre-Columbian Americas. Condition / Notes: These prints range in size from 12 1/4 x 9 1/4 (for horizontal images) to 8 3/4 x 12 3/4 (for vertical images), with mountings measuring 18 1/2 x 13 and 18 1/4 x 11 1/4. They may display some age/wear indications, including toning, mild edge wear, and very minor soiling. We identify any advance flaws that come to our attention during cataloguing. For lots which include only books, our shipping charge applies to any address within the fifty United States. For lots which are not books, the stated shipping cost in this listing will apply only to addresses within the continental 48 states.
