Description : Baule Moon Mask
H: 22 cm (9”)
Ivory Coast, late mid 20th century
Moon masks, also sometimes referred to as sun masks, are masks with gentle facial expressions that are aesthetically pleasing to us as Europeans. They symbolize natural phenomena such as the moon or the sun. Such masks appear in the major masquerades of the Baule. The slightly oval shape is surrounded by a broken zigzag band, in front of which is a quadruple band of small triangles strung together. The face itself is adorned with small scarifications on the forehead, temples, and cheeks. A hairdo carved in a grid pattern and the brownish color complement the impression of a beautiful African face.
