Description : AN EGYPTIAN SERPENTINE SPHINX Roman Period, Circa 2nd Century A.D. Formed of mottled serpentine, the sphinx is depicted couchant on an integral rectangular base, with a naturalistically carved slender body, the rib cage and the musculature of the haunches defined, the long tails curling up around the right leg, wearing a nemes headdress, the facial features finely carved, 48cm long. Provenance: Ex. Collection Annie Trotter/Ian Parsons (d.1990), with Katherine House Gallery Marlborough, Private collection of a lady, Rome, acquired prior to 2005.
