Description : Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Pende peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A lovely elder female figure hand-carved from hard wood. The female presents her forward-leaning pose with a conical lower body dressed in a skirt held by a knotted cord, delineated arms draped along her abdomen, and a slender neck. Her exaggerated head displays recessed coffee-bean-shaped eyes, contoured cheek bones, full lips, a flared nose, and cupped ears, all beneath a finely-incised coiffure with a slender top knot. Her advanced age is depicted by her raised clavicle bones and shoulder blades, sunken facial features, and pendulous breasts, and her body is covered in a gorgeous dark-brown patina.
