Description : This mask's features are related to the Songye Kifwebe with the concentric circles incised around the eyes. The round structure of the mask and the oval eyes are characteristic of Luba. They are danced in pairs one representing the male and the other female. The male is more elongate. The rituals connect the community with the spirit world. They appear at the death of a chief or other eminent person as well as when a person assumes an important political position. The dance during the night of the new moon to honor ancestors. Condition good with old crack repairs on top and bottom with normal scuff marks. Second half 20th. C, H. 14'' W. 10'' D. 8''.
