Senufo Firespitter Horizontal Mask (Kponungo, or funeral head masks), in carved wood, Mali/Burkina Faso, early 20th c. Used by Poro male societies, representing an aggressive supernatural power used to combat any forces that threatened a village. Combining features of antelopes, buffaloes, crocodiles, warthogs, (and in this case, chameleons) to symbolize power, used in anti-witchcraft ceremonies. 12 1/2 x 24 x 12. Good condition.
