Description : Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kuba (Bushoong subgroup), ca. mid 20th century CE. A sizable helmet mask representing the head of a mythical entity known as Bwoom. Comprised of a wooden frame that is covered with burlap as well as sections of hammered copper, several areas are further adorned with cowrie snail shells or colorful beaded strands, a large burlap beard hangs below the chin. This type of mask is one of three types of royal Kuba masks that are understood to embody nature spirits (mingesh): Woot, the creator as well as the founder of the reigning dynasty, Woot's spouse, and Bwoom who, in accordance with various versions of the myth, is believed to be the king's younger brother, a commoner, or a person of Twa descent. Condition report : Expected chips and abrasions, with indentations and darkening to some copper panels, darkening to some shells, loosening and losses to some beadwork strands, and chips to nose, ears, and areas of peripheries, otherwise in great condition. Nice detailing remaining throughout.
