Description : African, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Shaba District. Hemba-Kusu culture, ca. early 20th century CE. A Katadors diviner's instrument in the form of a square body with rounded face, round eyes, smile, and a tripartite spiky pointed coiffure to rear. Art of the Kusu culture of the left bank of the Lualaba River is relatively rare and reflects the influences of neighboring Luba, Hemba, and Songye cultures. Size: 8H x 3-5/8D x 1-1/2W. Provenance: Ex-private Pickard collection, Oklahoma City, OK, collection begun in 1959 following university work in Africa.
