This is the rating and price for African Dance Mask - Ritual Holo Mask, Congo, Circa 1930-1950. Used For The Initiation Of Young Boys Into Adulthood, This Example Is 8, 1930

Description : AFRICAN DANCE MASK - Ritual Holo Mask, Congo, circa 1930-1950. Used for the initiation of young boys into adulthood in festivities in which the initiates perform with newly carved masks with painted wooden visage surrounded by a raffia mane that concealed a handle used while dancing. This circumcision ritual is mandatory for all young men, held in remote locations by secret societies. The mask is only used that one time and is considered a male sacred object, for obvious reasons. This example is 8 x 6 x 5, excluding the all around 6 fringe. Very good condition with the expected wear. Private collection Spruce Head, ME.
