Description : This Dan Deangle mask is classic in its features with slightly closed eyes with a cool distant look, a large expressive open mouth and a vertical ridge running from the bridge of the nose to the forehead, representing tattooing. This mask is identified as Dan mask, but it could come from the Wee or Guere people. Great mask, with its oval shape, used dark surface and bold carved features is called Deangle or Tangle. Thought to portray a female, it dances in a style thought to be feminine, with gliding steps and graceful movements. Deangle dances for all to see as she entertains and instructs the village in peaceful pursuits. The face is surrounded by a complex costume designed to enhance her appearance and with the bells to give sound to her dance. The cowry shells are attached to rolled raffia representing a ceremonial headdress with brass bells, surrounding the lower part of the mask raffia and cotton cloth, magic pouches Ñ are thought to enhance the power of the mask. A mature & serene spirit seems to inhabit this piece. complete her costume, Pigment paint. Condition good shows signs of usage. H. 13'' W. 10. D. 3 1/2''.
