Description : 19th century AD. An iron axehead from a battle axe, with crescent-shaped blade and tapering tang for insertion into a shaft. Cf. a similar shaped axe in the British Museum collection, accession number Af.7218. 142 grams, 18.7cm (7 1/4). Ex California, USA, collection formed since the late 1960s, acquired on the European art market before the late 1990s. The axe seems be of African type, widely used in sub-Saharan Africa, Botswana and South Africa. The tang was inserted horizontally or vertically inside the shaft, and probably also fastened with ropes. [No Reserve]
