Description : These African Statues from the Ashanti tribe of Ghana, Togo, and the Ivory Coast, hand-carved of wood. mid 20th. C. 30+ years old. The round, flat disc heads, columnar body with outstretched arms and smooth, black surface convey the Asante (or Ashanti) ideal of beauty. The doll is carried by the wishful woman and is cared for as if it were an actual baby while she is waiting for conception to occur. The women carries the doll and treats it like a real child, dressing it up, adorning it with jewelry and putting it to bed. The fertility doll is easily recognized with the large round head and large forehead, a symbol of beauty in Africa, and a cross shaped body. This is a very popular style of African figure, a talisman carried for fertility purposes, made of light sese wood, Ashanti tribe, designs on front and back of head. Called the Lollie Pop style.
