Description : West Africa, Ghana, Akan peoples, Anyi group, ca. 19th century CE. A hand-built terracotta memorial head with a ringed neck base. The abstract head is comprised of bulging eyes with central slits, curved eye brows, a prominent nose, a thin mouth, miniscule ears, smooth cheeks with several ritual scarification marks, and a tall forehead, all beneath an elaborate headdress signifying rank or prestige. Covered in layers of dark-brown pigment, this is a wonderful example of fine pottery portraiture! Custom wooden display stand included.
