Published: Schädler, 1994a: 263 (male mask) Schädler, 1997b: 317 (male and female mask) Exhibited: Vienna, 1994 Munich, 1997 Burgrieden-Rot, 1998 The exact dating and placement of these rare terracotta masks in the history of Makonde art remains an open point of research. Fenzl (ed.) 1997:27 states that. 'The possibility exists that a transition of terracotta masks was continued, like that discovered in South Africa in the course of excavations.' There, helmet masks were found... which can be dated to 500 A.D. They are regarded as the oldest sculptures of the African iron age yet discovered south of the Equator.' Schaedler (ibid) believes that due to the way terracotta masks and wooden masks were used, the terra-cotta masks were more than likely a precursor to the wooden masks, and that the wooden masks were carved to simulate the forms of the terracotta versions.
