Simpson Gallery, New York Exhibited: Syracuse, New York, Joe and Emily Lowe Art Center, Masterpieces of African Sculpture, February 16-April 1, 1964, no. 215 Literature: Piening, 1964, fig. 125, illus. George and Winifred Harley arrived as missionaries in Liberia in 1926 and stayed for the next 34 years with a few brief absences, retiring in 1960. During their long career, they collected more than 1000 masks among the Dan/Mano people and Dr. Harley published his well-known Masks as Agents of Social Control in Northeast Liberia (1950), which remains a classic with Vandenhoute's study of 1948. As Wells (1977, p. 23) remarks: Dr. Harley's data are particularly important because they were collected at a time when many informants memories reached into the period before the Poro society (and other secret societies) had begun to undergo profound change. The mask offered here is certainly one of the oldest to appear on the market, judging from the thickness and age of the patina, both inside and on the outer surface of it. The rectangular-shaped holes on the perimeter are very uneven, another indication of age.
